Celebrating Oak Apple Day - 29 May
Restoration Day, more commonly known as Oak Apple Day or Royal Oak Day, was an English public holiday, observed annually on 29 May, to commemorate the restoration of the English monarchy in May 1660. It has also been known as Shick Shack Day, or Oak and Nettle Day.
Membury is one of the few places in England where it is still celebrated by the 'Raising of the Bough'. This involves hauling an oak branch up the outside of the tower of St John's church.
Thank you to Richard Burrough for the photos of the oak branch on it's ascent to the top of the tower on 29 May 2018.
